Farmer's Almanac Planting Calendar 2026

What is the Farmer's Almanac planting calendar, how does it work, and how does it compare to a science-based USDA zone planting schedule?

Published February 9, 2026

What Is the Farmer's Almanac Planting Calendar?

The Old Farmer's Almanac, published annually since 1792, includes a planting calendar based on two systems: (1) regional last frost date recommendations, and (2) a moon phase planting system (sometimes called biodynamic or lunar planting) that assigns different garden tasks to different phases of the moon cycle.

The frost-date system is sound science — it's essentially the same USDA zone-based approach used by university extension services. The moon phase system, however, is a traditional folk practice with limited scientific validation.

📚 Historical note: The Almanac's weather predictions are famously hit-or-miss, but its frost date data and regional planting calendars are well-regarded and align closely with USDA data.

Does Moon Phase Planting Actually Work?

The evidence is mixed. Some peer-reviewed studies have found small but statistically significant effects of lunar cycles on plant germination and growth. Others have found no effect. The scientific consensus is that while moon phases influence tides, there is insufficient evidence that they reliably influence garden outcomes to the degree the Almanac suggests.

That said, many experienced gardeners swear by lunar planting — and at minimum, following a calendar of any kind tends to produce better results than planting randomly. If moon phase planting motivates you to garden on a schedule, that alone makes it worthwhile.

FAQs

Is the Farmer's Almanac planting calendar accurate?
The frost-date-based planting recommendations in the Almanac are generally accurate and align with USDA data. The moon phase recommendations are a traditional system with limited scientific backing but are harmless to follow.
What is the best free planting calendar?
Our free USDA zone-based planting calculator provides crop-specific indoor start dates, transplant dates, and direct sow dates for 40+ vegetables at no cost, based on official USDA 2023 climate data.
Does the Old Farmer's Almanac have a planting calendar by zip code?
Yes, the Almanac's website offers a zip-code lookup for regional frost dates and basic planting calendars. Our tool similarly uses zip codes to identify your USDA zone and generate a detailed, crop-specific planting schedule.
